5 Home Furnishing Trends for 2020

These days, few of us are interested in fad trends when we’re looking to revamp our home, or a room. Aside from the cost of constantly replacing disposable, cheap home décor, there’s much more awareness of the effect on the planet as we grapple with climate change and sustainability. Several of the home furnishing trends for 2020 focus on natural, earthy elements with a nod towards the environment and the great outdoors.

Sustainability

Designers have incorporated consumers’ desire for a stylish home with the need to incorporate organic elements from the environment. Recycled wood can be used for chairs, tables and floors and even recycled plastic is now used to create exciting, high end products for the home. Sustainability will not go out of fashion so it’s safe to assume that much more effort will be put into creating these products in the future and this trend is therefore unlikely to ever go out of fashion.

Neutrals

Neutral are basically whites with cool or warm undertones and they’ve been popular for years. For 2020, the key is a shift from cooler neutrals such as grey to warmer neutrals such as beige or taupe. Neutrals are great for furnishings as well as walls and they don’t have to be boring; consider them a starting point for your chosen look and step forward from this point.

Earth Tones

Still in keeping with mother nature, earth tones like taupe, clay and rich forest greens create a natural look for unwinding or meditating after a long day. The colours and textures mimic that of wood, metals and foliage found in nature’s most basic elements.

Mixed Metals

Metals will be absolutely everywhere in 2020 and just like with wood and the trees in the forest, you can mix metals up in the same room, although take care not to use more than three different types in close proximity in order to avoid a messy appearance. Iron and gold or bronze work well together or silver and brown metals. Tin panels are expected to become a popular splashback option for kitchens. Again, think durability, sustainability and mother nature.

Green Accents

There’s no colour that brings an outdoor feel to your room like green. Go for solid green accessories or a leaf pattern; it’s a fresh colour and perfect for adding a pop of colour to a neutral environment. Better still, buy some houseplants; they not only look good but also clean up the air. Seek advice at your local garden centre before you buy to ensure that you purchase a plant that will thrive in your particular environment and require a level of maintenance that you are comfortable with.
