1 - Choosing the right bed
We spend 20,000+ hours in bed so choosing the right one is very important! There are lots of sizes and types of bed to pick, but bear in mind the following as you browse:
- typically a bed should be replaced every 7-8 years unless it is showing any signs of damage before this point
- For the most comfort, the length of your bed should be around 10-15cm longer than the tallest person who will be sleeping in it
- We've provided information on standard dimensions but these can differ so be sure to measure both your bedframe and mattress before purchase. Don't forget to get measurements for the headboard as well.
- It's key to make sure your bed fits the space you have - including plenty of room to get in and out and walk around the bed. Try to select the largest bed that fits the available space for maximum comfort.
- Don't forget storage - many beds now offer under bed storage built in, but if you wish to store items under the bed do make sure to check the under bed clearance room
- Remember lighting as well - if you're planning to have lamps to help create a softer light in your bedroom you'll need to check not only the location of plug sockets but also ensure that a lamp table or suitable shelving can be accommodated within easy reach of the bed
Typical dimensions for bed sizes are as follows:
- Small single - 75cm x 190cm
- Single - 90cm x 190cm
- Small double - 120cm x 190cm
- Double - 135cm x 190cm
- King Size - 152cm x 198cm
- Super King Size - 180cm x 200cm
2 - Which mattress is best for you?
Mattresses can be a confusing purchase with so many options available, and personal preference also plays a huge part in terms of what type or softness of mattress is going to be most appropriate. We've detailed the most common types of mattresses available and their features and benefits below for you. After all, if you're investing in a new bed, it makes sense to ensure you pick the perfect mattress to go with it.
Memory Foam - these mattresses can tend to be more expensive, as they are topped with a layer of temperature sensitive visco-elastic material that helps the mattress to mould more fully to your body. Another benefit of these mattresses is that you are less likely to feel any movement from a partner sleeping beside you with can lead to better sleep.
Open Sprung Mattresses - these mattresses consist of an interconnected spring system - they are often used for orthopaedic mattresses due to their firmness. They are often lighter than other types of mattresses but can sink in the middle if they are not of a high enough quality.
Pocket Sprung Mattresses - one of the most popular types of mattress, the springs are sewn into individual small pockets. As the springs aren't linked they are free to move with you as you move in your sleep, often providing higher levels of comfort.
Natural Mattresses - these mattresses are made of organic materials with no chemical nasties and are becoming increasingly popular. They are designed to help stay warm in winter and cooler in summer due to breathable natural materials and have absorbent moisture wicking properties.
3 - Wardrobes & Chest of Drawers Buying Tips
Most bedrooms feature at least one if not both a chest of drawers or a wardrobe for that all important clothes storage. Often it's space that dictates which items are most appropriate for your bedroom, but it's also important to consider the following points before making a purchase:
What type of clothes storage do you need?
Will you be hanging lots of clothes such as shirts or dresses? If so, perhaps a larger wardrobe with more hanging space is going to be more practical. However, if your clothes are mainly folded then more drawers will be useful. These could be drawers that are inbuilt within the wardrobe itself or contained within a separate chest of drawers.
How many people's clothes will be stored in the room?
Perhaps your home has some smaller bedrooms that don't have sufficient storage space so you will have extra clothes to house in your bedroom. If so, you'll need to account for this when choosing furniture. A two door rather than one door wardrobe is often more appropriate for storing clothing for two people, as they can have a side each.
What material should you choose?
This may be determined by the furniture you already have or the design style you are trying to achieve but if not, we've included some of the advantages of commonly used materials for bedroom furniture below:
Oak - enormously popular, in part due its strength and durability, oak bedroom furniture can be found in chunky classic styles as well as more modern designs.
Pine - this is the perfect material for more classic and rustic bedroom designs as the knots in the wood give it a unique and appealing aesthetic
Walnut - walnut and other dark woods are also popular for bedroom furniture whether as part of a dark wood collection or as individual items
4 - Bedroom Storage & Accessories Advice
Choosing how to ensure your bedroom features the right amount and type of storage and is furnished with the appropriate accessories is essential to getting the perfect finish to your interior design. We believe that one of the most important considerations is to ensure that any clutter is minimised. Whether you're seeking a country cottage rustic style bedroom design or a more clean and modern look, it's going to be hard to get a good night's sleep if there's clutter everywhere.
Our top tips for getting your bedroom storage on point are to write a quick list of everything you need to store so you can tick these off as you pick out what furniture is needed, as well as ensuring you take accurate measurements of the space you have available to house your new furniture.
Some of our favourite bedroom storage items include:
- blanket boxes: these are suitable for any room in your home but are great for bedrooms in particular. Whether they're to store blankets and soft furnishings or other items they are versatile as well as stylish
- Lamp tables - these items can be multi functional with built in cupboard space and shelving allowing you to achieve extra storage space as well as a home for your bedside lamp
- Dressing tables - not just handy for additional seating and providing a great area for getting ready, often these tables come with drawers and shelving that can be a useful addition for your bedroom storage.
