Furniture for Small Spaces

Compact living is now a part of life in many towns and cities and architects and interior designers have been coming up with ever more inventive ways to make smaller living spaces work harder. For many people, especially first-time buyers and renters, there’s a trade-off between living close to where they work and play and size, with many opting to trade size for location. For our part, we’ve been keeping an eye on housing market trends and ensuring that we offer a good range of items for those at this stage of the property ladder to comfortably furnish their homes at an affordable price. To follow are some of the ideas we’ve come up with; please bear in mind that we also offer a fully bespoke design and manufacturing service so if you have a specific space to fill and don’t see anything to fit it on our website, please give us a call on 01992 353550.

Maximise Height

It sounds obvious but if floor space is limited, go for height. Tall furniture can have the added bonus of making your room appear bigger as it accentuates the height of the room and reduces floor clutter.

Utilise Corners

The corners of a room are often dead space, but they don’t need to be. As long as there’s nothing on the wall such as a radiator to impede any furniture, a corner is as good a place as any to place a computer desk, cabinet, cupboard, bookcase or display stand.

Stack

Also based on the ‘maximise height’ principle, if you don’t have the floor area, work your way up! A nest of tables is perfect for this, providing tables as required for visiting guests without taking up space.

Folding Tables

If there are only two of you, you don’t need a permanent dining table for four or six people. Instead, opt for an extending or folding table. The extra chairs can be used in the bedroom, hallway or living room when not in use, provided you choose them carefully.

Finding Multi-Function Furniture

With storage space at a premium, consider buying furniture that incorporates storage, such as a bed or coffee table with drawers. It’s surprising how much extra storage can be gained in this way.
