How to Integrate an Office into a Home

With the high cost of commuting and better communications brought about by the digital revolution, more and more of us are tucking ourselves into a quiet corner of the house with our desktops and laptops. Fewer people on the roads or public transport is good for the environment and being able to work at home means we can stay in bed a bit longer, do a few chores before we start our working day and generally be more productive and less tired, without the drag of the daily commute. There is a downside though; working from home requires discipline to avoid being distracted, plus our home can become associated in our minds with the stress, politics and daily grind of our job.

If possible, it’s best to have a totally separate room to work from; a self-contained home office with a door that can be closed at the end of the day and has the sole function of being a workplace. If your home cannot accommodate a separate office, the next best thing would be a separate section within an existing room, perhaps in one part of an L-shaped room or in a corner of the living or dining area. Homes are generally smaller these days, especially in expensive cities such as London. However, with good planning, it’s possible to blend your office into your home without it looking out of place. Many of our ranges include desks, chairs and storage which blend effortlessly into their environment without looking incongruous.

Here, we take a look at some possible selections for your home office. Your choice will obviously depend on your available space, the style of your existing furniture and of course your taste; traditional or contemporary.
