It’s all about the light

Scandinavia is deprived of light for six months of the year, so it’s unsurprising that Scandinavians do everything possible to create a light and airy ambience in their homes. This can be anything from painting all the walls in white or another light colour to placing mirrors in strategic places where they will maximise the reflection of light into every dark corner. Furniture tends to be crafted from pale coloured wood whilst base colours are neutral and earthy shades that can be found in nature.

The carpet will probably have to go

You can probably just about get away with a light or neutral carpet but in general, the look is better achieved with wooden floors or light-coloured tiles. The minimalist mood is warmed up with texture and a wooden floor lends itself to rugs that might offer a pop of colour and structure to a neutral canvas.

Choosing accessories for your Scandi-style room is key. Functionality meets design in the Nordic world with the aim being to create a warm and inviting cosiness for the long hours to be spent indoors. Soft, natural textiles such as sheepskin, wool and linen play their part in adding layers and depth to a clean background; knitted cushions and throws for example work well.

Look outdoors for inspiration

When it’s too cold to go out, as it often is in Scandinavia, bring the outdoors in! Houseplants not only look great on a simple background but they also clean the air and provide an ambience of serenity. Look to the outdoors for mementos that provide depth and warmth, such as pine cones or pebbles for the hearth.
