Pantry Ideas
What Do You Want From Your Pantry?
Traditionally, a pantry was the main food storage unit of the house. It was often a walk-in cupboard for groceries and fresh produce, featuring a meat slab and an air vent. It was frequently located under the stairs until the 1960s when refrigerators became commonplace.
Pantries fell out of favour due to the advent of fitted kitchens with built in larder cupboards but in recent years they’ve become elevated to the focal point of a modern, trendy kitchen and they can be used to store much more than just food. Before ordering your bespoke pantry, it’s worth spending some time pondering what its main purpose will be. We’ve put together a few pantry ideas to generate some creative thoughts but remember that it’s your pantry and you can store whatever you like in it, even the ironing board!

The Multi-Purpose Pantry
If your pantry is going to have mixed use; interchangeable between dried food, spices, tins, crockery, small appliances, cutlery and so on, a multi-purpose pantry with varied storage solutions is for you. The trick to making best use of the space is to plan ahead. Look at the rest of your kitchen and decide how much of your tailor-made pantry should be allocated to each storage section. You can economise on space by attaching spice racks to the insides of the doors and including drawers so that everything is visible. For stability, crockery is better suited to shelves whereas small appliances fit nicely in cupboards, with the ones you use the least at the back.

The Furniture Statement Piece Pantry
In recent years, the pantry has been elevated from its old-fashioned designation as a humble storage cupboard to an uber-trendy and sought-after statement piece of furniture. As such, it’s worth devoting time to considering the environment in which it will play the starring role as your go-to cupboard, combined with style appeal. An eye-catching colour that contrasts with a fitted kitchen is frequently chosen by our interior design customers to add interest and create a focal point to a kitchen or dining area.

The Small Space Pantry
A tall, thin pantry maximises storage capacity by utilising the area closest to the ceiling that would otherwise be dead space. It’s great for squeezing into a tight corner or alcove, either within the kitchen itself or just outside it. The upper part can be used for storing less frequently used items such as a guest dinner service or bakeware. A unit this size is also perfect for small families or for those who live alone.

The Drinks Cabinet Pantry
For those of us not fortunate enough to have a wine cellar, space for our favourite everyday or vintage wine has to be found within the kitchen. This is where a built-in wine rack inside a pantry is a brilliant solution towards keeping the wine at its best in a dark environment, preferably on its side. Gin and whisky afficionados can also store their favourite tipple here whilst favourite crystal tumblers and wine glasses look perfect on shelves behind glazed doors. An impressive sight when opened, a drinks cabinet pantry is sure to create serious kitchen envy amongst your dinner guests.

The Store and Display Pantry
If you have the space, your bespoke pantry can solve all of your kitchen storage dilemmas whilst creating a stunning backdrop to your dining area by combining storage with display shelves for your most eye-catching pieces. This achieves the ultimate in integrated functionality and aesthetics. Even the vacuum cleaner can be tucked away behind a cupboard door whilst special plates, glasses, ornaments and photos can be displayed behind glazed doors.
