Ideas for Creating a Minimalist Bedroom

What is Minimalist Interior Design?

The goal is to have a simple, uncluttered space. Furniture should have clean lines and room colours should tend towards monochrome with stronger colours used as an accent. The space should look neat, uncluttered and organised with each piece in the room playing its part in the overall design. This means taking out all those knick-knacks that have been accumulated on your travels and the painting that your grandmother gave you, unless of course these items are part of your curated design. The minimalist style is far from boring; it makes a bold statement whilst being functional and giving the feeling of breathing space.

Why Create a Minimalist Bedroom?

A minimalist bedroom creates a serene, calming ambience that is conducive to a good night’s sleep. Out of all the rooms in your home, this is the one in which you spend the most time and it is time in which your mind and body rejuvenate themselves, ready for another day. It’s an especially great concept for a small bedroom where space is at a premium, making it feel light and airy.

Simple Ideas to Create a Minimalist Look

There are a few things you can do to ‘get the look’ quite easily. It goes without saying that before you start, you need to declutter, taking out anything that is not going to play a part in your carefully curated minimalist bedroom. Then think about the points below and how you can apply them to your bedroom.

Decide on the Neutrals

Your ‘blank canvas’ could be mainly white or mainly another neutral such as grey, beige, or ‘greige’. Then use accent colours throughout the room, meaning one or two colours. More than that and you’re in danger of making the space look cluttered. In the photo above, the patterned curtains add interest and tie in with the greenery in the vases.

Use Accent Decorations

The rule for the minimalist style is to use decorations as accents and not to overwhelm your space with a lot of things. This includes artwork. Instead of a group of small paintings, use one or two large ones as in the room shown above, where the relatively bold piece of artwork stands out on a neutral brick wall.

The Importance of Storage Solutions

Storage space is key in a minimalist bedroom. When choosing furniture, go for the option that includes storage, such as a dressing table with drawers. You should aim to put away anything that doesn’t form a part of your carefully curated design, leaving out only the pieces that are intentionally placed.

Bright Colours Can Be Used to Accessorise

If you think a minimalist bedroom will be flat and boring, think again. Bright accent colours can be utilised in accessories such as duvet covers and curtains. Remember to keep these colours co-ordinated and few in number as this really is a case of less is more. In the example above, the blue in the duvet set picks out the blue of the curtains. Even the colour of the flowers in the vase has been carefully chosen.

Warmth is Welcome

Introducing your own style is not contrary to the minimalist design ethic. It makes a living space feel less clinical and more like a home than a hotel room. A carefully selected rug and a statement colour on one wall gives the room above a particular style whilst solid oak furniture and warm lighting create a cosy yet simple feel.
