Top Five Tips for Choosing a Bedroom Wardrobe

The bedroom is our place of refuge; somewhere in which we spend a third of our day, a place we go to when we’re unwell and sometimes just to gather our thoughts. As such, it should be kept tidy, airy, clean and fresh to provide the environment we need to refresh our bodies and souls. Storage then, is hugely important. Without adequate storage, it doesn’t take long for clutter to appear and to detract from this welcoming environment.

With so much choice of wardrobes, how should one go about deciding on the most suitable one for our particular circumstances? The solution is to narrow down the choice in a few simple steps and then make a considered selection from what remains.

1. Freestanding vs Bespoke

A bespoke wardrobe, crafted to fit a particular area, is excellent for maximising bedroom space, especially if your room has high ceilings, enabling you to put less-frequently used items such as bed linen at the top. However, if you’re not living in your ‘forever home’, you may prefer a wardrobe to take with you to your next place, perhaps to put in the guest bedroom there. Free-standing wardrobes generally have a faster delivery time, which could be another consideration if you need something to move in with.

2. Purpose

The purpose of a wardrobe can vary according to gender. Ladies may prefer more long hanging space for dresses and coats whilst suits, shirts and jumpers can comfortably hang at half the height, instantly doubling the amount of hanging space available. Also think about how much space you need for shelving, drawers and shoe racks. Many wardrobes feature innovative interiors for all kinds of accessories and if you’re opting for a bespoke wardrobe, you can effectively build your own interior. Remember that a deep shelf can render items at the back hard to find, so if your space is deep, drawers can be a better option.

3. Size

If you’re opting for a tailor-made wardrobe, the size is pretty much self-determining, as you will want it to fill a particular space. For freestanding wardrobes, there is usually only one place it can go, or perhaps two. If the latter, and you’re the type who like to change things around from time to time, bear in mind that a large wardrobe can be hard to move.

Should you be lucky enough to have a very large space, contact us at Furniture4YourHome. We make extra-large wardrobes that other companies often don’t want to make because they’re long, and therefore awkward to deliver. For example our New England four door large wardrobe pictured above is 97cm wide and is available in a wide choice of colours.

4. Style

Your choice of style will partly depend on whether you’re having your bedroom refurbished completely or simply adding a few items to existing décor. As long as your general design theme is considered, it is not necessary for items to match. For example, mid-century modern items fit together easily as they tend to follow a particular style of interior design. Similarly, country or rustic pieces from different woods or finishes sit comfortably alongside each other in the same way as different trees in a forest do.

5. Material and Finish

Choice of material and finish will depend not just on your choice of style but also what you want from your wardrobe. If you want a matching suite, check if there are pieces such as a chest of drawers and bedside cabinets in the same collection. Also, think about whether you want an investment wardrobe or something to fulfil a short-term need. A painted wardrobe in a timeless colour such as grey can provide the same kind of lifetime investment as a wooden wardrobe. The devil is often in the detail and a painted wardrobe with wooden handles or cornices can effortlessly blend a painted wardrobe with wooden pieces from different collections. We are always happy to help with design choices.
