How Tall Should My Wardrobe Be?

The height of a new bedroom wardrobe is partly determined by available room space and partly by what is to go inside it.

There may only be one wall available once other key furniture items such as the bed have been placed in situ, or the room may have an ‘awkward’ height due to being in the eves. A great method of imagining how much space it will occupy alongside everything else is to place masking tape on the floor where the edges of the wardrobe will be located.

The internal wardrobe layout should be planned with a view to minimising clutter elsewhere in the room, by providing organised storage. Before ordering a new wardrobe, it’s a good idea to work out how much hanging space you’ll need and whether it should be full or half length. Then factor in how many drawers and shelves for clothes, accessories, shoes, jewellery and so on.

1. The Children’s Wardrobe

Ideally, a child’s wardrobe will see him or her through to the early teen years. The addition of drawers or shelves allows for accessories, books and toys to be stored neatly out of sight. Children’s wardrobes are by definition shorter than adult wardrobes and are therefore usually easier to tuck into awkward corners created by eaves and other overhead obstructions.

 2. The Gents’ Wardrobe

Generally speaking, a gents’ wardrobe will require very little full length hanging space, if any at all. Full length coats can often be accommodated in hallway storage and dressings gowns either behind the door or in the bathroom. Most hanging space will be needed for shirts, followed by jackets. The remainder of the wardrobe space should be an assortment of shelves and drawers to accommodate jumpers, t-shirts, ties and other accessories, perhaps including shoes. The minimum height of each hanging section should be 40 inches with a further minimum of 3 inches between the rail and the top of the wardrobe, to allow for taking the hangers in and out.

3. The Ladies’ Wardrobe

Ladies generally tend to need bigger wardrobes than men, partly because of the need for full length hanging space for dresses, jump suits and so on. Around 66 to 72 inches should be allowed for vertical clearance in this section of the wardrobe. Obviously if the lady in question is not as interested in wearing such items, the amount of full-length hanging space can be reduced. There will also be a requirement for shorter hanging rails, similar in height to those used in gents’ wardrobes, for blouses and other tops that crease easily and it is therefore preferable to hang rather than fold. Open shelves and drawers should be introduced for folded clothes, handbags and baskets of accessories. If there is enough space, shoe compartments are fantastic to keep shoes tidy and away from hallways and under beds.

4. The Extra Height Wardrobe

Period houses in particular often have high ceilings that can be extremely beneficial for creating extra storage space. Rather than using up valuable floor space, going tall fills wall space that would otherwise be void. If you know that you’re the type to constantly put things on top of the wardrobe, creating dusty clutter, this is the wardrobe for you. In planning the hanging space compared to shelf and drawer space, be sure to allow for the fact that the least used items will need to be stored at the top, because it is harder to reach.

5. The Full Hanging Wardrobe

If you’re in the fortunate situation of having more than one wardrobe and are the owner of lots of dresses, a full hanging wardrobe is brilliant for keeping them all together and thereby freeing up space in the main wardrobe. In this situation, the main wardrobe can be a combination of half height hanging rails, shelves, drawers and shoe compartments. Some couples may in this situation be able to share the main wardrobe, which can be a much more beneficial use of space than having the more common ‘his and hers’ separate wardrobes.
