5 Clever Storage Solutions

You’ve done the ruthless declutter and bestowed endless bags of belongings to the charity shop but you’re still short of storage space. What next? It’s time to get creative. We’ve come up with five ways to store your essential items that you might not have considered before.

Blanket Box

1. Blanket Box

A blanket box is no longer used for storing blankets in most households as most of us use duvets these days. For this reason alone, it might never have occurred to you to purchase one but they can be incredibly handy and versatile. A wooden or neutral painted blanket box will fit in with the décor in any room so it can be moved to wherever it is most needed. If children’s toys on the floor are the bane of your life, a blanket box in the play area is brilliant for just throwing everything into before bedtime. In the bedroom it can be used for bags, jumpers, spare dressing gowns or even towels. Pop it under a window with a cushion on top and it will double up as a window seat.

2. Storage Bench

Whilst many of us are already converts to benches instead of chairs around the kitchen table, how many have considered a bench with storage? It really is a fantastic way to use space that would otherwise be wasted, to store anything from crockery to watering cans. A painted storage bench looks ultra-chic painted in the Farrow and Ball colour of your choice and can be crafted to the exact size to fit your space.

3. Tall Chest

When most of your floor space has already gone, try taller units. This trick works particularly well in period properties with high ceilings. Tall wardrobes lend themselves to masses of extra storage space and you can keep the items you use less frequently at the top. A tall, skinny chest of drawers can be utilised on the smallest of floor spaces in any room needing that little bit of extra storage.

4. Coffee Table with Storage

Not only does a coffee table with storage provide an invaluable hiding place for homeless living room items, it also looks incredibly stylish. The space underneath a coffee table is normally dead space so this storage solution uses no extra floor area compared to a normal coffee table.

Painted Console Table

5. Hall Console Table

The hallway is often an area of the home that is under-utilised in terms of storage, or includes a console table without drawers. As the first room visitors see when entering the home, first impressions count so it’s important that this space is clutter-free. Drawers are perfect for storing gloves, portable umbrellas and other knick-knacks whilst the top of the table can be used to display flowers or photos and drop the post off.
